The building was one of two such buildings constructed by the Federal Aviation Administration in the 1930s, one of a number to close aviation-related shuttles. The other is on one of a number of US Army aircraft facilities off of the North Carolina coast. It was only closed in 1954 and opened again in 1972.

The building itself was completed in 1952 by the Pentagon, and has been in operation since 1962.
