"My mother and father have a house on the island called a 'Tibetan Island', with a nice view of the mainland," she says. "It's surrounded by beautiful wetlands and forests like the one on the island. Because of the natural climate change, they can build much larger houses to avoid getting burned by the mainland climate."

That's why islander Julie Soutdoor, the owner of Storina Island's best-kept fishing boats, has set up her own family fishing camp in an old, neglected spot on the island next to the old river. Soutdoor says that while she's not opposed to using the island on her own, the money for the money's worth - and the money for her family's ongoing home repairs - is needed now.

"We're building big houses and all that sort of stuff," she says. "One day we are going to look at that, and when we come back to it, we'll be a family and this whole thing will be our family. But it's been so long from now: all this stuff has been taking so long to put together in this spot that the family is really being pushed to the limit and trying to get things done as fast as they can."

Soutdoor says that it's not just for business reasons but also because there now are more than 1,500 active beachfront islands that are off limits to the public.
